Kea information Report

The kea look like include a beautiful big green of each wings long flight feathers and red/orange on the rump feathers. The keas beak is long and gracefully curved.

Kea are a unique and endangered parrot psittacosis species endemic to the Southern Alps of New Zealand. They are one of three parrot species which evolve in isolation over millions of years playing an  important role as alpine seed distributors and cleaners and are highly valued as one of the most intelligent bird species in the world.

To ensure that kea are optimally managed and protected it is necessary to understand the species natural habitat  life cycle and behavior in the wild their interactions with people and  the range of threats impacting on them. Additionally, understanding best practice management of kea in captivity is also necessary to ensure the captive population provides positive education and encounter opportunities to inspire  new generations to care for kea in the wild.

You have found some interesting information on Keas. My daughter used t work at Orana Park, and was involved in some of the . care and training of the keas. They are her favourite bird species. As they are important alpine seed distributors, I'd be interested to know what species of trees/seeds are their favourites. Or do they eat just about any seed sources available to them?
